SB 442 Explainer: CDLs for Legal Immigrants

July 4, 2026

Quick Take

This bill was an unnecessary attack on legal immigrants moving to Georgia with valid CDL licenses.

Why It Matters

Georgia, along with other states, is suffering from a shortage of Commercial Drivers License holders. At the federal level, the Trump administration has taken steps to make that worse by revoking CDLs for immigrant truck drivers, based on a continued attack on legal immigrants. This bill was the Georgia equivalent.

Key Facts

SB 442:

  • Sets CDL expiration at a maximum of 5 years, regardless of immigration status.
  • Requires any non-citizen with a CDL moving to Georgia to retake the knowledge and skills CDL exam.

My Perspective

The Commercial Drivers License is a federally regulated license that is issued by states. Right-wing extremists have targeted non-citizen CDL holders for persecution, claiming that they are unable to recognize English-language traffic signs and are therefore a danger on the roads.

This is simply ridiculous, making this bill nothing but red meat for the MAGA base. To suggest that someone can pass the CDL knowledge and skills test without understanding road signs is simply nonsense. CDLs cannot legally be issued to immigrants without legal status, so this bill literally establishes barriers to legal immigrants moving to Georgia to help with the truck driver shortage.

It is shooting ourselves in the foot for no benefit other than satisfying MAGA fever dreams about immigrants.
