Elections & Voting

Keep doing what we do well.
Change what needs changing.

Why This Matters

Since the 2020 election there have been a lot of bogus claims about Georgia's election system. The truth is that we do some things very well and can improve on others.

Approaches Worth Considering

For too long, the state legislature has failed to adequately fund public education, and more recently, they are taking steps to divert public education funding to private schools.  That is a disservice to Georgians everywhere, and there is a much better way.

Keep Doing What Works

  • Three weeks of early in-person voting, including 2 Saturdays and optional Sundays, helps to ensure that more people can participate, including working families and rural voters.
  • Georgia's participation in the ERIC (Electronic Registration Information Center) progam helps remove voters who have moved or passed away, using reliable cross-state data.

Fix What Is Broken

  • Changes to the State Election Board after the 2020 election have made it extremely partisan and removed the elected Secretary of State from the board entirely, leaving it to be run by political appointees. This should be undone.
  • Drop Box restrictions, introduced after the 2020 election are unnecessary and only serve to make it harder for some voters to cast lawful ballots.

Independent Redistricting Commission

Voters should choose elected leaders. Politicians should not choose their voters.  I support a redistricting committee that is:

  • Bi-partisan and includes independent members as well.
  • Independent from the legislative body and political influence.
  • Charged with drawing maps based on precinct, city, and county boundaries, with a focus on communities of interest.
  • Barred from drawing gerrymandered maps.

Campaign Finance

Georgia campaign finance laws are weak and ineffective. We should make changes to remove well-funded bad actors from the system as much as possible.

  • Campaign Finance Reform - removing as much money from the process as possible will help return power to the people.
  • Eliminate Leadership PACs - in the short time these have been around, they have been consistently used to "game" the system and give benefits to certain politicians. They should be repealed.

Larger Reforms

Other states and countries have implemented reforms that can ensure that election of representatives belongs to the people, not partisan actors:

  • Ranked Choice Voting - eliminating the cost and confusion around run-offs and opening the process to more voices
  • Proportional Representation - Although less well known in the U.S., proportional representation systems can give voters more meaningful choices and help reduce gerrymandering.
